What is Proxy?

Proxy server is a server which acts as an intermediary between your computer and an internet end server. When you use a proxy to get a web page, file, connection or some other services from a different server, your computer first contacts the proxy server, and the proxy server then forwards your request onto the end server. When the end server replies, the proxy server sends the reply to your computer.

That is to say there is no direct connection between your computer and the end server. So proxy servers can help you to hide your ip address, bypass surfing restrictions, speed up your internet connection and so on.
